We Believe That The Time Has Come For Syrian Intervention

We the undersigned believe that it is time for the international community to take action in Syria to prevent crimes against humanity.

More than 2,000 people have died since Russia and China vetoed the first UN Security Council Resolution in October 2011. Between 6-8,000 people have died since the uprising began. Hundreds more have been tortured and illegally detained.

We believe that we should protect those who are striving to enjoy the same rights that we in the Free World enjoy every day as articulated in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

A new standard for international intervention in the affairs of states that undermines those basic rights and freedoms must be developed. We believe that it is important that where the global community has the ability to save lives then it has the imperative to do so.

Intervention, where it is for humanitarian purposes, is not something to be feared. We believe that humanitarian intervention in states which torture and murder their own citizens as an act of political and social repression is not only justified but it is of the upmost importance.

We accept that in the past interventionism has not been as successful as it might have been; nonetheless, we see the action by the international community in Libya and that of NATO in the Bosnian and Yugoslav Wars as a model for intervention.

The Libyan no-fly zone prevented a potential massacre in Benghazi. We cannot allow that kind of mass killing to happen in Syria either. Iraqi Marsh Arabs, Rwandans, Bosniaks at Srebrenica and Kurds have suffered where the international community did not intervene, and we believe that that mistake cannot be repeated again.

We condemn the veto by China and Russia of the draft UN Security Council Resolution supporting Arab League efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria and calling for an immediate end to all violence.

A Syrian-led transition of power away from the corrupt and murderous Assad regime must happen as soon as possible to prevent further deaths in Syria.

“You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor and you will have war.”

- Winston Churchill on Chamberlain’s return from signing the Munich Pact with Adolf Hitler

This was quoted by Douglas Murray when he quoted Britain’s most famous Prime Minister at the Cambridge Union in 2007, speaking on a debate on the dangers of a nuclear Iran early last year.

I wrote here on the dangers of Iran that is in possession of a nuclear bomb.

Iran is threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz through which passes 20% of the worlds oil, and is probably closer to acquiring a nuclear bomb than it has ever been despite mysterious attacks on their nuclear programme. As Iran is put under pressure globally and regionally it becomes more likely that they will eventually produce a nuclear weapon.

As Douglas Murray points out, when they are on the verge of acquiring The Bomb Israel will strike to prevent that from occurring.

Governments around the world will condemn Israel, but they will privately be thankful that the Iranian theocracy doesn’t possess the power to “eliminate this disgraceful stain from the Islamic world” (Israel).

Romney wins in Iowa

Mitt Romney has won the Iowa Caucuses, beating Rick Santorum by under 20 votes out of 122,255 votes that were cast.Romney received 30,015 votes and former US senator Rick Santorum received 30,007 votes.

The result is quite interesting  - Santorum had been receiving very low scores in opinion polling carried out across Iowa during the Primary campaign. He has been travelling around Iowa in a Dodge pickup truck – and he was the first candidate to visit every county. Old fashioned hard work pays off , eh?

Santorum has a relatively weak national campaign, so he may struggle to gain traction in the next few primaries. But, of course, he could raise loads of money from the social conservative and Christian fundamentalist PACs.

Going into New Hampshire next week, Romney is my favourite to win the nomination. Will he beat Obama, though?

No. Obama has more offices open in Iowa, where he is unopposed for the Democratic nomination, than all of the Republicans put together. It may not be a landslide, but Obama will still win.

Full results:

Romney – 30,015 – 25%

Santorum – 30,007 – 25%

Paul – 26,219 – 21%

Gingrich – 16,251 – 13%

Perry – 12,604 – 10%

Bachmann – 6,073 – 5%

Huntsman – 745 – 1%

Rick Perry has stated that he is suspending his campaign and returning to Texas to reevaluate his campaign.
